‘I love you’- do these three words still have meaning? I mean not in the exaggerated Shakespearean context but is this just but a modern charade? When was the last time you genuinely told someone I love you? When did you last appreciate the presence of the people in your life? I find it comforting to admit to these words, because love has no shame. Whether it’s agape, filial or romantic love, it’s in our natural state to love and to be loved.
My greatest worry with our generation is the nauseating façade that is associated with love. We manipulate love to get sex, money, and much like everything else except to fully express and experience the ultimate affection. I know it’s weird to just shout ‘I love you’ out of the blues, but what happens if you do? Are you afraid of being loved back? Are you scared that your heart might be broken in this quest? What if you had to fall in love 100 times to meet the one? Or if you never got to know your ‘annoying’ parent who calls every other day to check up on you? What if you did not have any friends to show of it? What if love, never existed?
I do not consider love as a weakness but rather as all the 50 shades of resilience because true love requires vulnerability, it requires strength to admit weakness. I am here for it, this being the month of love we can as well put on our cupid suit and get to work. These three words have so much pressure and divergent meaning around them that it’s almost insane to believe when someone says they do love you. I mean, have you truly fallen in love, like when you first hold your child, or when you meet your celebrity crush, when you finally get a dog, when you get the properly glazed nyama choma, or if you’re like me when you have that first bite of chocolate after months.
That emotion is insane; I want to feel like that every single day and no one should hold themselves back from experiencing love in all its little ways. Go out and give back to your community, call your family more often and if you have that special someone, don’t give them a moment of doubt. But, don’t forget- with the advent of love, obsession, infatuation, greed and hate also rose. I still do not get it why it is so much easier to spread hate, anyway, who’s got time for all the negative emotions when we can all do the happy dance and get away with it? Love, not because you’re expecting it back, but because it liberates you. Love unapologetically, let love consume you to the very last bits of your soul, because when it’s all said and done- every heart needs company! I love you- I really do!
